Dilemma Stories: Season 1 – Episode 4

> “He promised my father I’d stop walking. Days later, I got a Fuliza alert… and realized I was funding my own surprise gift.”

The Engagement That Made Headlines

Joseph wasn’t just charming — he was strategic.

At my cousin's ruracio in Kiambu, he stood up boldly and declared:

> “Sir, your daughter deserves more than bodas and matatus. I’m buying her a car by December.”

Everyone clapped. Dad looked proud. Mum whispered, “Umeangukia sponsor wa ukweli.”

By that evening, my photos were trending on TikTok with the caption “Lucky Nairobi girl blessed with a ride!”

Little did they know… the real sponsor was me.

The Hustle Behind the Promise

Joseph said he was working on a “hot fintech deal” with investors who had been featured on Yahoo Finance Kenya — a silent partnership he claimed would explode by end-year.

He’d talk about angel investors, pitch decks, crypto-backed insurance apps — things that sounded too complex, but I believed him. He even showed me a pitch deck on Canva.

Then one night, he asked:

> “Babe, can you check your loan limit on M-Shwari and KCB Mpesa?”

“It’s for calculations,” he smiled.

Naively, I told him.

Two days later, I saw two unexpected deductions: KSh 15,000 Fuliza and KSh 32,000 KCB Loan.

The reason?

He had borrowed using my phone while I was in the shower — claiming I’d given him access.

The Deal Was a Lie

That “hot fintech deal”?

Never existed.

I searched for his startup on Yahoo Finance and Crunchbase. Nothing.

One of the photos from his pitch deck was traced to a Nigerian tech page. Another had a stock photo watermark still on it.

I wasn’t funding a car. I was funding a fantasy.

And the worst part?

My parents still think I’ll be driving by Christmas.

What Do I Tell My Family?

I want to protect my reputation.

But I also want to walk away with dignity.

Joseph is begging, saying he was “under pressure to impress my folks.”

He claims he’ll repay me once he gets his next “big deal.” But I know that song too well.

I can’t tell my dad — he might get sick.

I can’t tell my friends — they’ll mock me.

So I’m stuck… repaying loans I didn’t take, for a car I’ll never drive, with a man I no longer trust.
