Love and Hustle in Rongai

When Carol and I got married four years ago, we were both hustlers — her doing natural hair from our single-room rental, me pushing mpesa float and selling mobile accessories at the stage. We agreed: no secrets, every coin we make goes into our future.

She said she had a dream — to open a natural cosmetics line. I encouraged her. I even took Sacco loans twice to help her buy equipment.

Little did I know, while I thought I was building our future, she was building hers alone.

The Yahoo Finance Bombshell

I was doing a casual online search on Kenyan SME funding when I saw a headline from Yahoo Finance Kenya:

> “Carol Organics Joins Top 50 Women-Owned Startups in East Africa”

I froze.

The woman in the feature photo was my wife, dressed in a sleek blue suit I had never seen, smiling at a launch event I never knew about.

The company?

Fully registered under her name only.

The listed shareholders? Her cousin and a Nairobi-based investor.

Me? Nowhere.

I Was Just Her Stepping Stone

That evening, I pretended I hadn’t seen the article. I asked casually how her day was. She said, “Just salon runs, slow day.” Lies.

I waited two days before showing her the Yahoo Finance article. Her face went pale.

> “I didn’t want to mix emotions and business,” she whispered.

“You wouldn't understand startup decisions. I needed control.”

Control?

I had been paying rent so she could attend trade expos. Sacrificing my own side hustle for her dream. And I didn't even own 1%?

The Real Dilemma

Carol says she’ll give me a “thank you package” once investors come through. A sort of goodwill exit. I’m not sure if I should take it.

Part of me wants to fight for a share — not out of greed, but out of principle.

Another part of me knows: love mixed with business only works if both hearts are honest.

Now I sleep next to a CEO I can’t trust.

And every time her name trends, I wonder if she’s plotting her next move — alone.
