Ruth stared at her phone screen, fingers hovering over the "send" button. It was a text she had typed and erased more than five times that week. A message meant for Victor—her ex-fiancé and the father of her child.
After walking out of the engagement last year, Ruth had sworn never to look back. But life, with all its twists, wasn’t done with her. Victor’s startup had just been acquired by a major investor, making headlines on Yahoo Finance Kenya—and Ruth couldn’t help but feel a mix of pride... and anxiety.
You see, Victor didn’t know he had a son. Ruth had kept the pregnancy a secret after their bitter fallout. Her mother had begged her to come clean, but pride always won. Now, seeing him flourish, she wondered—was it time?
The dilemma deepened when Victor’s sister, Lisa, unexpectedly visited Ruth’s workplace. She casually mentioned, “Victor is thinking of settling down with someone he met in Rwanda. He seems really happy now.”
That night, Ruth stood over her son’s crib, phone in hand, heart in pieces.
The message read:
> “Victor, I know this may come as a shock, but before you move on... there’s something you need to know about your past—and your future.”
She never hit send.
