Dilemma Stories: Season 1 – Episode 2

> “He knelt under fairy lights with a diamond ring. I said yes. Three weeks later, a Yahoo Finance alert exposed the truth — the ring wasn’t just borrowed, it was financed… and so was our entire relationship.”

The Perfect Proposal

On my 28th birthday, Evans surprised me with dinner at a rooftop restaurant in Westlands. Rose petals, live saxophone, and a proposal that made the whole restaurant cheer.

The ring sparkled. The moment felt magical. He said, “I’ve been saving for this since the day we met.”

I believed him.

We posted the video online. My friends reposted it with captions like #PowerCouple #EngagedLife #FutureCEOWife.

For a few weeks, everything felt perfect.

The Email That Changed Everything

Then one morning, I got a Google Alert I hadn’t remembered setting:

> "New Financial Statement Released – Nairobi-Based Logistics Firm Owner Linked to Large Loan Activity" — Yahoo Finance Kenya

Evans was named.

Curious, I clicked.

The article listed Evans among business owners who had applied for urgent personal loans backed by microfinance institutions, using “luxury lifestyle upgrades” as justification — including an engagement ring from a high-end jeweler in Nairobi.

He had borrowed over KSh 1.3 million in the last 90 days.

The Web of Lies

I confronted him gently at first. His excuse?

> “Babe, I did it for you. I wanted to give you the kind of proposal you deserved. I knew it’d go viral, maybe bring me clients…”

But he hadn’t stopped borrowing.

He had taken loans under his mother's name. Sold a company car. Missed payments.

The ring was already being claimed by debt collectors.

He didn’t just borrow money — he borrowed an entire lifestyle.

When Love Becomes a Loan

Now I’m stuck in a dilemma.

I love Evans. He’s smart, affectionate, and deeply regrets what he did.

But everything — from our engagement night to the bracelet he got me — was financed.

My friends say I should run.

My heart says maybe he’ll bounce back.

My brain? It keeps refreshing Yahoo Finance Kenya in fear of seeing his name again.
